Greenhouse gas report 2024
Climate protection starts with transparency. Since 2019 the University of Bern has been declaring its greenhouse gas emissions in the annual report by showing their source, how they are recorded, and what efforts are made to continuously reduce them. It is worth noting that expansions of the balance perimeter, improved databases, and the growing university community have influenced the emissions development and at the same time increased the validity of the balance. With this in mind, the 2024 greenhouse gas balance forms a solid basis for the further development of the Climate Roadmap 2030 and for the targeted prioritization of effective reduction measures.
The most important findings are as follows:
-
Compared to the reference year 2019, total emissions in 2024 increased by 1.2 percent
-
The reasons for this was the expansion of the scope of the balance in different areas: in 2024, for the first time, anesthetic gases from veterinary clinics (Vetsuisse) and Experimental Animal Facilities (EAC) have been included in the greenhouse gas (GHG) balance. Additionally, business travel by train was newly included (as of 2023). Business travel by air increased between 2023 and 2024.
-
Due to the full transition to the use of biogas in 2024 scope 1 emissions were greatly reduced
