Contribution toward climate protection

Climate protection projects are a key component in achieving global climate goals. The University of Bern is aware of its responsibility and makes a climate protection contribution for emissions that cannot currently be fully avoided.

This contribution is based on a combination of measures: For emissions from air travel, CO₂ credits from suitable climate protection projects are purchased in accordance with the cantonal personnel ordinance. In addition, alternative avenues for climate action and environmental contributions are being pursued, such as projects under the Engaged UniBE or idea competitions

These contributions are not directly offset in the greenhouse gas balance. Rather, the focus is on taking responsibility for our own emissions and making an effective contribution to climate protection. In the long term, the University of Bern wants to increase its use of carbon capture projects and negative emission technologies, as these are of central importance for achieving the net-zero target. The key objective here is to offset unavoidable emissions through the permanent removal of CO₂ from the atmosphere.
