Environmental tip 2: Environmentally friendly travel

Travel – embrace sustainable mobility
Vacation time is travel time. Keeping sustainability in mind when traveling is yet another way to make a valuable contribution toward environmental protection. You don’t need to make any sacrifices, simply more conscious decisions. We’ve compiled a few pragmatic tips and useful links for you here:
1. Where are you headed? Destinations in Switzerland are also fun and relaxing
- Have you ever been to the “Swiss Grand Canyon” or did you know that J. R. R. Tolkien, who wrote “The Lord of the Rings”, was inspired by Swiss landscapes? 6 Swiss destinations reminiscent of far-flung places
- Travel can also be stressful. Why not take a staycation on your own balcony or in your own back yard? Without having to pack a suitcase or rush to arrive on time?
2. Take a train through Europe instead of flying
- Train travel generates considerably less CO₂ than driving a car or flying.
- Many European destinations are easy to reach by train, with travel times actually comparable to flying if you include time spent at the airport.
- Train stations are centrally located, which can simplify arrival and departure.
- Night trains let you traverse long distances while sleeping, which also saves you the cost of accommodations for one night.
3. If air travel is unavoidable
- Prioritize direct flights: Every layover increases your trip’s carbon footprint.
- Take a train to the airport instead of traveling by car or taking a feeder (connecting) flight. Many carriers offer Rail&Fly tickets.
- Economy instead of business: Per-person emissions are significantly lower in economy class.
- Travel light: less luggage saves fuel.
- If possible, prioritize options using sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) when booking your flight or offset your CO₂ emissions – but do so through serious providers like atmosfair, for example.
4. Early planning prolongs the anticipation and can offer further advantages
- Booking early saves money, particularly on train travel: Compare train, bus and airplane tickets.
- It’s better to plan one longer trip with only one journey than lots of short trips.
- For adventurous spirits, no time pressure: Travel by sailing ship.
5. Sustainable travel in your destination country
- Use public transportation or take a bike instead of a rental car or taxi.
- Drink tap water if it’s safe and avoid plastic bottle use.
- Consume water and energy consciously, for example when using air conditioning and hot water.
- Help out on clean-up campaigns: Litter collection campaigns combine commitment with a sense of community.
- Select sustainable accommodations with environmental certifications or stay at a campsite.
